[edit]Its population in 2018 was 16,000, people, 99% of whom were indigenous to the K'iche' ethnic group.
The town is known as the "Vegetable Basket of the Americas" (La Hortaliza de las Américas) due to the intense cultivation of vegetables in its vicinity. Its agricultural production includes onion, cabbage, carrot, turnip, beetroot, radish and lettuce. Various flowers are grown. Its artisanal production includes cotton fabrics, basketry, candles, leather and fireworks.
Tourist attractions include nearby thermal baths and Paradise Valley.
