Altenkirchen is a small town and district on the island of Rügen.

[edit]Altenkirchen is a historic municipality with around 1,000 inhabitants on the Wittow Peninsula, at the northern tip of Rügen. It serves as a central hub for several smaller settlements, including Drewoldke, Gudderitz, Lanckensburg, Mattchow, Schwarbe, Presenske, Wollin, and Zühlitz.

[edit]- Pfarrkirche Altenkirchen, An der Kirche 2. One of the oldest Romanesque brick churches in Rügen, begun in 1185. Look for the Svantevit Stone (Svantevitstein) built into the wall near the altar, a relic from the Slavic pagan era at nearby Cape Arkona. The separate wooden bell tower (Glockenstuhl) is a typical regional landmark.
