Understand
[edit]A town of medieval origin that arose following the construction of the castle in the 12th century, which, due to its coastal geographical location and lack of natural protective barriers, was exposed to continuous maritime attacks and developed very little. The name Amposta derives from the Latin ab posta or amni imposita, which means 'placed on the river'.

River facade
[edit]The river facade of Amposta, unique in Catalonia, has as its distinctive feature the facades of the buildings overlooking the river, such as the Lafont house, the López i Soler house and the Miralles mill. Two elements stand out:
- 2 The Hanging Bridge, Avinguda de l'Alcalde Palau. The bridge replaced the old boat passages, which were the only means of crossing the river at Amposta until then. The bridge was located on the road from Barcelona to Valencia and was built on the initiative of the municipal council led by mayor Joan Palau i Miralles, with the support of the deputy from Tortosa Agustí Querol i Subirats. The first project of 1907 was rejected and the works did not begin until 1915. On August 15, the laying of the first stone took place. In 1938, during the Civil War, the bridge suffered two attacks by the Italian legionary aviation that was part of the army of the dictator Franco; the last was on March 10, 1938. This was definitive, since the entire structure was destroyed by the effect of the incendiary bombs. It was reopened on October 4, 1939. :
- 3 The Amposta Castle ruins (Castell d'Amposta). Built in the 12th century by the Order of the Hospital and destroyed during the Catalan Civil War. It is an archaeological site.
