Assamese, also called Axomiya (অসমীয়া Axomīẏā) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by 15+ million people worldwide, Mainly in the Indian state of Assam. It is also spoken in states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.

Pronunciation guide

There are 13 vowels and 40 consonants in written Assamese, some of which are not distinguished by their pronunciations.

Vowels

Assamese vowels can either be independent or hooked on to the consonant in the form of diacritics. The distinction between long and short vowels is purely orthographic and both vowels are pronounced the same. The vowel অ does not have any equivalent diacritic and certain consonants in Assamese words are pronounced with the অ-sound.

Consonants

Certain Assamese consonants have its aspirated equivalents, which are pronounced with a puff of air. However, unlike most Indian languages, there's no distinction between dental and retroflex consonants in Assamese.
