Avellino Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Avellino is a city in the Campania region of Italy. The best time to visit the city is Christmas, for the traditional market along Corso Vittorio Emanuele (pedestrian area) and its particular lighting. The Carnival period and August 15, on the occasion of the celebrations of the Madonna Assunta and the civil holiday, are also good times to visit.

By bus from Capodichino international airport (Naples) costs €4.70. You can go also by taxi for "special price only for you" (more than €100). There are some car rentals directly on the airport.

Avellino has two toll booths on the A16 motorway (Avellino Est and Avellino Ovest), the important motorway junction that allows traffic coming from the A16 to continue southwards onto the A3, and the not insignificant "Ofantina" superhighway, an important road artery that connects Avellino to numerous towns in the Irpinia area.

Avellino Station, located on the border with the municipality of Atripalda, is the terminus of the railway lines to Benevento, Cancello and Rocchetta Sant'Antonio. This last line is however a tourist line. The runs to Benevento, Salerno, Naples and Lioni are replaced by buses.

Avellino is connected by the local transport company, Autoservizi Irpini, to the cities of Rome, Naples, Benevento, Caserta, Foggia, Salerno and its university, Campobasso and Termoli.

    Get around

    [edit]

The city is small enough to get around by foot. There are some buses but plans may be difficult to find online and maps on stops are burnt by the sun. You must buy a ticket at a stand and it's valid for a certain time span. Google Maps route finder gives good approximates for walking distances and walking times around the city.

The A.IR companies and the Azienda Trasporti Irpini provide connections between the city and 96 municipalities in the province, also taking care of travel within the city centre.

Avellino Ferragosto . August 15th . The city centre is prepared in honour of the religious celebration organised for the Assumption, as well as in honour of the civil celebration, with lots of fun and a large turnout of people.

Feast of Saint Rita . May 22 . This is an exclusively religious celebration, but very exciting. The population of the area is very devoted to Santa Rita, so the celebration is very popular and appreciated. In the procession that is organised for the occasion, many people decide to carry large candles and walk barefoot, in honour of the saint. It is also common, on this day, to see children dressed as Santa Rita.

Laceno d'oro , [email protected] . Free . August-September . The Laceno d'oro - first a Review and then a Festival of Neorealist Cinema - was born in 1959 thanks to the faith in their dreams of two young intellectuals from Irpinia, Camillo Marino and Giacomo D'Onofrio, and to the tutelary deity of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Promoted by the magazine "Cinemasud", the film award entitled "Laceno d'Oro" tied its fate to one of the most beautiful locations in the province of Avellino. The award was born, in fact, to enhance the Laceno plateau from a tourist point of view and intended to be a recognition for the best cinematographic works inspired by Neorealism. From that year, until 1988, twenty-eight editions followed and only in 1980 did the earthquake manage to prevent its realization. After this period the Laceno d'Oro was reborn in the municipalities of Avellino, Atripalda and Mercogliano.

Irpinia StreEat mood , Corso Vittorio Emanuele II . Irpinia haute cuisine review in the city's pedestrian artery. All the Irpinia culinary excellence on the street.

Irpinia (the "wolf land") is the green mountainous district around Avellino, with a number of medieval towns and picturesque sights. Ariano Irpino upon Tricolle (the "three hills") is the largest town, known for its ancient majolica and typical cuisine; here King Roger II the Norman held in 1140 the Assizes of Ariano, and nowadays there are several historical monuments, museums and parks.
