Bahía Negra is a town 9f 2,800 people (2022) in Alto Paraguay department in Western Paraguay. It's the northernmost town along the river Paraguay and it's surrounded by a Pantanal-like environment.

You can get to Bahía Negra by air, road or river.

By plane

SETAM flights from Asunción to Bahía Negra on Wednesdays. The return ticket cost GS.580,000. The plane departs the Aeropuerto Militar (military airbase) which is next to the Silvio Pettirosi airport at 07:00 and make stopovers at Concepción, Puerto Casado, Vallemí, Carmelo Peralta, and Fuerte Olimpo before reaching Bahía Negra around 11:00.

By bus

San Juan S.R.L. runs a one weekly bus from Asunción on Thursdays, the ticket cost Gs. 270,000. Travelling time is around 16 hours when road conditions are good. The last 200 km of the journey are unpaved and could last up to 6 hours. The bus make 3 stops for lunch along the way.

By car

Bahía Negra is 823 km by road from Asunción. You travel northwest along the Transchaco highway for 415 km up to Cruce Los Pioneros, then north on an unpaved route for 408 km. Travelling time by car should be between 16-21 hr, depending on road conditions. The unpaved road may be closed to traffic when there are heavy rains.
