Bally (বালি Bāli or বালী Bālī) is a laid-back town north of Howrah city, in the Howrah district of southern West Bengal. It is home to the Belur Math (বেলুড় মঠ Beluṛ Maṭh), headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission.

[edit]- 1 Belur Rasbari (বেলুড় রাসবাড়ি Beluṛ Rāsbāṛi). A riverfront temple complex belonging to the Daw family of Jorasanko. Built by Purna Chandra Daw in 1790, the temple complex consists of a navaratna (nine-pinnacled) temple, six Shiva temples, and a riverside ghat with Corinthian columns and a clock. There are two buildings left of the temple that are used as homestays for tourists.
- 2 Nivedita Setu (নিবেদিতা সেতু Nibeditā Setu). A multi-span extradosed bridge, named after a disciple of Swami Vivekananda. It was built in 2007 to reduce congestion on Vivekananda Setu 50 m (160 ft) upstream.
- 3 Vivekananda Setu (বিবেকানন্দ সেতু Bibekānanda Setu). A 880 m (2,890 ft) long rail-cum-road bridge, commonly known as Bally Bridge (বালি ব্রিজ Bāli Brij). It was built in 1932 as Willingdon Bridge, and later renamed after Swami Vivekananda.

The Belur Math (বেলুড় মঠ Beluṛ Maṭh) is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda. Next to the Hooghly River, one can sit on the banks of the river during evening time and relax. The Belur Math complex has a small but beautiful museum of Sri Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi, along with Swami Vivekananda. The evening "aarti" is something you should see in the Belur Math.
One most uncommon and attractive ritual of Belur Math is, at the time of Durga Puja, they worship a girl dressed with beautiful Banarasi sari and jewelleries which resembles as "Kumari Puja" meaning worshiping "Kumari" i.e., a unmarried and young girl who haven't reached the age of 10 years. The girl has to dress according to tradition, and the priests will worship for as long as the time scheduled for the puja. Thousands of people come on this day to see the pujas, and only on this day are snaps allowed in the compound.
There are direct train services to 5 Belur Math Howrah from Howrah Howrah . You can also come here by bus, auto or taxi, which are better options as they drop you off at the entrance. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the complex. It takes 20-25 min to get there and around 40 min to return, because this route is longer and becomes more congested.
- Old Shrine. The original shrine of Belur Math until the present one is constructed. It has the hallowed memories of Swami Vivekananda and other disciples of Ramakrishna.
- 4 Ramakrishna Sangraha Mandir. A museum.
- Samadhi Enclosure. Contains the remains of the seven disciples of Ramakrishna.
- 5 Swami Vivekananda Temple. A temple dedicated on the namesake monk.
