[edit]The population of this town in northwestern Iran, by the Caspian Sea, is mostly fishermen and farmers, with some government employees as well. 70% of the population speak Turken; others speak Kazakh or Farsi. The predominant religion is Islam.
Places to see include the "miankale" wetland and peninsula, the "naharkhoran" forest, and the carpet sellers' bazaar, which is held on Mondays. Whereas in other cities staid black clothing is common, in this town, people wear bright, colourful dresses. Caviar is exported to Europe from this city.

[edit]From Imam Khomeini airport:
By airplane: take the shuttle bus to Mehrabad, which has flights hither (usually around 08:00 and 18:00).
By train: at 19:00 you can go by taxi or shuttle bus to the 2nd "shahed" station, take off, then walk 1 minute to the metro station and take off at "shoosh" station and take a taxi to "Meidan E Rah Ahan", the "railway station square". The taxi will not cost you more than US$0.50 train to "gorgan". Departing at 19:00, take the first class train (about US$3); you will spend almost 11 hours in the train, so you can get enough sleep and rest on train. Leave the train one station before the last station.

By bus: there are buses from "Terminal E Shargh" (which means "bus station for eastern cities"), if you get there before 14:00 you can get a bus straight to Bandar Torkaman from company number 1 or 2, but after 14:00 you have take the "gorgan" bus.
