Understand
[edit]The City Built By Trees was one of epithets once given to New Hampshire's most northern City at the edged of The White Mountains. Berlin, New Hampshire grew as a city on the backs of the Logging, paper, and pulp industries coming for a time to be the heart of these industries in the United States.
At one point the mills of Berlin hummed, and logs choked the Androscoggin River as log drivers floated harvested timber down from the Great North Woods, but Berlin is no longer the heart of industry it used to be. Today the city of Berlin is a little more of a quiet city, with less than half the population of its 1930 peak of 20,000.
A vast network of ATV trails can take you from the city of Berlin to many other communities within the North County of New Hampshire such as Gorham, Milan, Errol, Groveton, Stratford, Colebrook, and as far north as Pittsburg.
