Buraimi (Buraymi) is a town in Northern Oman and the capital of the Al Buraymi governate.
Understand
[edit]Buraimi is an oasis town in on the border of the United Arab Emirates. The adjacent city on the UAE's side of the border is Al Ain.
Buraimi is considerably smaller than the adjoining city of Al Ain and is visibly less affluent. Streets in Buraimi are not named and development could be considered 'piece meal' with large villas often appearing some metres from roads, footpaths do not occur away from the main streets.
Before the relocation of the border (see above) it was fairly common for expatriates from Al Ain to rent villas and apartments as they were roughly 50% of the cost of an equivalent villa/apartment in Al Ain, however the change in border policy has led many of these expatriates to relocate to Al Ain due to long waiting times at the border checkpoints during peak traffic hours.
Get in
[edit]There are 3 border posts in Buraimi: Al Madheef Border post is reserved exclusively for GCC Nationals. Hilli Border post is also exclusively for GCC Nationals. It means, if you are not a GCC National, you MUST cross at Khatam Al Shukla border post, which is 20 km away from the bus station of Al Ain and also 20 km away from the bus station of the neighboring Emirati town Al Ain.
By bus
[edit]- 1 Buraimi bus station. State-owned company Mwasalat runs some buses every day.
From Al Ain there is a daily bus. The price is 7 rials or 66.5 dirham (Jan 2026). Bookings should be made on the website in advance, as the bus is almost always full on the day of departure. From Muscat and Sohar you can take bus line 41 or 202 which both take 4:30h. Bus line 53 takes 7 hours from Muscat.
On the opposite direction from Buraimi to Muscat and Sohar it's best to take bus line 41. Bus line 202 might be hours late as it passes the UAE-Oman border twice prior.
Get around
[edit]Transport in and around Buraimi is by taxi, which like the majority of taxis in Oman are coloured orange and white. Drivers accept payment in Omani rials or United Arab Emirates dirhams. A trip within the township of Buraimi will generally cost no more than 2 dirhams or 0.2 rials.
