    Cala Ratjada is a town in Llevant, the northeast region of the island of Mallorca. It's on a rocky peninsula with beaches to the north and south, and has a resident population of about 6500. It's a family-friendly place, and popular with German and British pensioners.

    Capdepera inland was the original settlement, rebuilt after 1300 when Jaume I wrested the island from the Moors.

    By road from Palma city is 80 km: follow Ma-15 east past the airport, Manacor and Artà.

    TIB Bus 401 runs from Palma city daily every 30 min, taking 1 hr 45 min via Manacor, Portocristo, S'Illot and Sa Coma.

    There's no direct bus from Palma airport, but Bus A42 runs to Cala Millor and Cala Bona.

    Bus 411e is an express from Palma taking 90 min. Bus 411 starts from Manacor, running hourly via Sant Llorenç, Artà and Capdepera.

    Bus 412 runs every 80-90 min from Manacor via Sant Llorenç and Son Servera to Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Port Nou and Costa dels Pins.

    Bus 422 runs from Cala Mesquida via Capdepera, and Bus 423 from Font de Sa Cala.

    Bus 424 follows the coast every 45 min from Portocristo via S'Illot, Sa Coma, Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Son Servera, Canyamel and Capdepera.

    1 Cala Agulla is the turnaround bus stop, on C Castellet and about 1 km from anywhere you want to be. All buses including 411e also stop downtown at Cala Ratjada Centre and on the coast at Son Moll.

    Most sights are in walking distance. The bus takes you to the castle.

    Capdepera Castle
    • 1 Port Cala Ratjada is the core of town, with the marina and cluster of eating places. It's all modern breezeblock.
    • 2 Casa March (Sa Torre Cega), Juan March 2, +34 667 120110. M Tu Th 10:00. No mere mansion, not even this sumptuous pile, can do sufficient credit to the memory of Juan March (1880-1962), businessman, philanthropist, and plutocrat so corrupt and powerful that everyone else had to bribe him some more to keep him sweet. "I am so rich, that I do not even know how rich I am" said he. The guided tour is mostly of the sculpture garden then you get a brief look at the mansion ground floor. Adult €12, child €8.
    • 3 Capdepera Lighthouse is at the eastern tip of the island, built in 1861 and still active. From here you can see Menorca.
    • 4 Capdepera Castle, Plaça des Sitjar 5, Capdepera, +34 971 818746. Daily Apr-Oct 10:00-20:00, Nov-Mar 09:00-17:00. There's been a castle here since Roman times, but it was wrecked then rebuilt in the early 14th century, and the surrender of Moorish Menorca was signed here.     • 5 Cuevas d'Artà, Las Cuevas, Canyamel, +34 971 841293. Daily 10:00-17:00. Karstic show cave, seen by multilingual guided tour. Adult €16, child €8.
    • Artà 10 km west has a medieval fortress enclosing a pilgrimage church.

    Sea bathing is safe
    • Beaches are safe and sandy. In town is Son Moll, and Cala Gat is 500 m east of the port.
    Cala Agulla is the north-facing beach, less crowded.

    • Lots of small supermarkets. Supermercado, Spar and Eroski are the main chains.
    • Saturday market is on Placa del Pins 08:00-14:00.

    Some 20 cafes and restaurants line the shore between the port and Son Moll beach.

    A dozen pubs, mostly a block or two back from the coast.

    Plenty of choice of Mallorcan and mainland Spanish wine.

    As of July 2025, Cala Ratjada and its approach roads have 4G from MasMovil and Orange, and 5G from Movistar and Vodafone.
