[edit]Geography
Cassano delle Murge is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the Apulia region of southern Italy. It is located on the Murge plateau, a limestone upland area characterized by rolling hills, karst formations, and wide rural landscapes. The town borders Sannicandro di Bari and Grumo Appula to the north, Acquaviva delle Fonti to the east, Santeramo in Colle to the south, and Altamura to the west. It lies in a strategic position between inland Apulia and the Adriatic coast, with Bari approximately 30 km away. The surrounding territory is mainly rural and agricultural, with olive groves, woodland areas, and dry-stone walls typical of the Apulian countryside. A large part of the local landscape is closely connected to the Alta Murgia National Park, a protected natural area known for its biodiversity, steppe-like environments, and traditional rural heritage.
When to go
Cassano delle Murge is located on the Murge plateau and has a Mediterranean climate with continental influences due to its elevation. Winters are generally mild to cool, with occasional colder periods, while summers are typically hot and dry, with significant daytime temperatures but lower humidity compared to coastal areas. Spring and autumn are often considered the best times to visit, thanks to pleasant temperatures and the surrounding natural landscape, which is particularly suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. Summer is lively due to local festivals and events, while winter is quieter but still suitable for cultural visits and excursions in the nearby countryside.
History
The origins of Cassano delle Murge are believed to date back to Roman times, as suggested by archaeological evidence found in the area. The settlement likely developed along ancient routes connecting inland Apulia with the coastal regions. During the Middle Ages, the town became more structured as a fortified settlement, a development reflected in the layout of the historic center, which still preserves traces of its medieval urban fabric. Over time, Cassano grew under the influence of feudal families and religious institutions, which contributed to the construction of churches, convents, and defensive structures. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the town expanded further, with the development of civil and religious architecture that still characterizes parts of the urban landscape today.
