Central Malawi lies on the southern part of the eastern shores of Lake Malawi and is home to the capital of Lilongwe. Its fairly flat terrain disguises the fact that it is part of the high plateau of central Africa.

Chitumbuka is spoken in Kasungu, Nkhotakota and Dowa districts, and parts of Lilongwe due to urban shift, along with Chichewa. Chichewa, on the other hand is spoken in most of the remaining districts in the region, but in shared percentage in districts above.
