[edit]- 1 Hooper (just south of WA-26, between Washtucna and Pampa). Once thriving, now a ghost town on the Palouse River. It was built by the McGregor Company based on the sheep-raising industry.
- 2 Steptoe Butte State Park, Whitman (US-195 north for 6 mi (9.7 km), turn east onto Scholz Rd, follow signs to Oakesdale and Steptoe Butte), [email protected]. 8AM-dusk, year round. A 3,612-foot-tall butte, formed from quartzite, rises above the surrounding flatlands. Discover Pass required ($10/day, $30/year).
- 3 Steptoe Battlefield, S Summit Loop, Rosalia (From 7th St, turn right onto Josephine Ave, then turn right onto Summit Ave), ☏ +1 509 337-6457, [email protected]. summer: 06:30AM-dusk, winter: 8AM-dusk. A small 4-acre site with a monolith, marking where on May 17, 1858 a small US Army detachment was defeated by a larger force of Spokane, Palouse and Coeur D'Alene Native Americans.
