Deià is a village in Serra de Tramuntana on the west coast of Mallorca, with a population in 2024 of 700. It's attractive place in the mountains, best known to English speakers as the final home of Robert Graves.
Get in
[edit]The village is 30 km north of Palma. Follow Ma-1110 to Valldemossa then twist and turn along Ma-10, which continues to Sóller.
TIB Bus 203 runs hourly from Palma, taking 45 min via Valldemossa, and continues to Sóller and Port de Sóller.
Get around
[edit]The village is small and walkable, but you want a car to reach the cove and explore beyond.

- 1 Sant Joan de Deià, referring to John the Baptist not the Evangelist, is a 18th century church off Ramon Llull north side of the village.
- 2 House of Robert Graves (Ca n’Alluny), Sóller 6, ☏ +34 971 636185. M-F 09:30-16:30. Robert Graves (1895-1985) was an English poet, classicist and novelist, best known for I Claudius. He came to live here in 1926, leaving in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War broke out. He returned in 1946 and lived here till his death. The house is furnished as it was in 1985. There's a garden and presentation of his life. Adult €10, conc €7, child €5.
- 3 Son Marroig, off Ma-10, ☏ +34 971 639158. M-Sa 09:30-14:00, 15:30-16:30. Italianate mansion of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria (1847-1915), an early advocate for preserving Mallorca's wildlife and habitats. It's now a museum and events venue. Adult €4.
Do
[edit]- Cala Deià is the only beach access. It's stony but sheltered and scenic. You have to pay for parking.
- Ruta de Pedra (GR221) is an eight day hiking trail along this coast from Andratx to Port de Pollença. The section from Deià to Sóller might take 3 hours.

Connect
[edit]As of July 2025, Deià village has 4G from MasMovil, Movistar and Orange, and 5G from Movistar. There are many dead spots on the approach roads.

[edit]- Sóller 10 km north is a pleasant but very touristy village with a tram to its old port.
- Valldemossa has a 14th century "Charterhouse" or Carthusian monastery.
- Palma de Mallorca the island capital needs a couple of days to explore.
