Fortune is a town of about 1,400 inhabitants (2016) in Southern Newfoundland, on the northern shore of the Burin Peninsula. The fishery as the biggest industry. For travellers it's most notable for the passenger ferries to Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

[edit]The name of the town is believed to have originated from the Portuguese word "fortuna" meaning "harbour of good fortune".
The main industry in Fortune is the ocean fishery which employs 400 residents. Species landed include cod, flounder, and haddock.

[edit]Driving (or hitchhiking) is probably the only way in from elsewhere in Canada. Fortune is on Highway 220, about 200 km from the Trans-Canada Highway.
By boat
[edit]SPM Ferries carry foot passengers and up to 15 vehicles from both Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
By plane
[edit]The closest airport is in Saint-Pierre, and almost all flights there are from Canadian destinations, but this means exiting and entering Canada anew. In Canada, the closest airports are Gander and St. John's.
