Gafsa Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Gafsa is a city in Tunisia.

Understand

[edit]

Gafsa is the largest city in Saharan Tunisia. It is quite off the beaten track, as most tourists only visit the city to change louage on the journey between Tataouine and Tozeur. However, if you look beyond the city's initial lack of appeal, it makes for a fascinating visit and there is plenty to do in and near the city. It also makes for a good base of exploring the nearby Sahara.

Get in

[edit]

By plane

[edit]

Tunisair operates domestic flights to and from Gafsa-Ksar airport. For international connections, the closest option is Tozeur to where Transavia France operates flights from Paris Orly. This is, however, the only international connection. If you come from elsewhere, your best option would be to fly to Tunis or Monastir and travel overland form there.

By bus

[edit]

The SNTRI line between Tunis and Tozeur stops at Gafsa and goes multiple times daily in both directions.

By train

[edit]

Gafsa has a railway station, but it is only served by one train every day in each direction.

By louage

[edit]

Perhaps the best way to get into Gafsa, the louage station is quite sizable albeit rundown. It is basically just a patch of sand with room for vehicles, don't expect any luxury.

The louage is a minivan with a set destination that departs when full. It is cramped and uncomfortable and the drivers tend to drive aggressively, but quite a reliable method of transportation in Tunisia. For those familiar with marshrutkas in the former Soviet Union and the Albanian furgons, it is basically that but in Tunisia.
