Gilgandra is a town of a little over 3,000 in the Central West region of New South Wales. It sits at the crossroads of the Newell Highway, a major road corridor betweel Melbourne and Brisbane, and Castlereagh Highway, the main connectors between Lithgow (and thus Sydney) and northwestern New South Wales. Add in Oxley Highway between Nevertire and Tamworth to the mix, though there is a 100-km-long concurrency with the Newell Highway.

By car
[edit]From Dubbo, Gilgandra is a 64 km (40 mi) drive north via the Newell Highway (A39). From Coonabarabran, head southwest on the Newell Highway for 95 km (59 mi) – or about 1 hour. More likely than not you're passing by Gilgandra as a rest stop.
From Lithgow, Gilgandra is 297 km (185 mi) north via the Castlereagh Highway (B55) – 173 km (107 mi) northwest from Mudgee and 144 km (89 mi) from Gulgong. From the other side of the Castlereagh Highway, head 211 km (131 mi) southeast from Walgett and 96 km (60 mi) from Coonamble.
By coach
[edit]Gilgandra is a stop along the daily Dubbo–Lightning Ridge coach by NSW Trainlink, which in turn is timed to meet up with the Dubbo XPT from Sydney – leaving Dubbo at 2:20PM and arriving at Gilgandra at 3:10PM. The coach from Lightning Ridge leaves at 5:50AM and arrives at Gilgandra at 9:35AM.
The Dubbo–Tamworth coach, which runs on the Oxley Highway between Gilgandra and Tamworth, also makes a stop at Gilgandra but doesn't run all days – but this too is timed with the Dubbo XPT. The coach from Tamworth departs early in the morning meaning you'll have to stay in Tamworth the night before.
