    • Collect fossils. Half of a mile northwest of Hedgesville is a road cut alongside Route 9 where middle Devonian fossils can be collected from the Mahantango Formation. The most common fossils here are the brachiopods Mucrospirifer and Spinocyrtia. Other local fossils include bivalves, the bryozoan Fenestella, the coral Heterophrentis, crinoids, the gastropod Pembexia, pteropods, and trilobites.
