Ivanhoe is a small service centre town of 162 (2021) in the Far West region of Outback New South Wales. If you end up finding yourself in Ivanhoe, you're likely there for two reasons – one, you need somewhere to stop along the Cobb Highway, or two, you're there for about 10 minutes or so stretching your legs as you take a break from the weekly Outback XPL train between Broken Hill and Sydney.

By car
[edit]The only main highway that passes Ivanhoe is the Cobb Highway (B75), which was fully sealed in 2020. It is 162 km (101 mi) south of the Barrier Highway (A32) turnoff near Wilcannia and 211 km (131 mi) from the roundabout with the Sturt Highway (A20) in Hay. The road is very straight but can get very tiresome – make sure you set up some music beforehand to minimise fatigue.
During dry days, it's also possible to use Ivanhoe—Meindee Road; however, this road is unsealed and takes about 206 km (128 mi) from Menindee. Only drive this road at your own risk as this road is remote even for Outback NSW standards.
By train
[edit]1 Ivanhoe Station is served by one train a week in each direction on the Broken Hill XPL, which require bookings on the NSW Trainlink website. The train from Sydney leaves in the morning and arrives at Ivanhoe late in the afternoon before finally arriving at Broken Hill. The same Xplorer train then returns back on Tuesday morning, stopping by at Ivanhoe. However, the station is 3 km (1.9 mi) south of the town and there is no connecting public transport from the town to the station. As such, the only people who ever leave the station tend to be residents, not that there's much of a reason to leave the station anyway (not excluding stretch breaks).
