Janakkala[dead link] is a municipality in Tavastia Proper.

[edit]Janakkala is a fast-growing rural municipality located around 95 km north of Helsinki and around 16 km southeast of Hämeenlinna. Its two largest urban areas are Turenki, the administrative centre of the municipality, and Tervakoski.

[edit]The most direct connection to the centre of Janakkala from both Helsinki and Hämeenlinna is to travel along Highway 3 (E12).

- 1 Saint Lawrence Church (Pyhän Laurin kirkko), Hakoistentie 345 (in the old church village). The last of Tavastia's medieval stone churches. The church's builder is assumed to be Marshal Åke Tott (1598–1640), who was the master of Häme Castle at that time, although the church was originally inaugurated already in 1520. At the east end of the church, three coats of arms of the Tott family can still be seen.
- 2 Hakoinen Castle (Hakoisten linnavuori), Hamppulantie 106 (next the Hakoinen Manor). A historical hill fort from the medieval period. The top of the rock is 63 metres (207 ft) above the water level of the near Lake Kernaala.
- 3 Tervakoski Oy, Vähikkäläntie 1 (in Tervakoski). A paper factory from the 19th century.

- 2 Mallinkainen Nature Reserve. Recreation area in the immediate vicinity of Lake Mallinkainen, including a beach and hiking trails.
