[edit]- 1 Senegambian stone circles (22 km (14 mi) north-west of Lamin Koto, on the north bank just across from Janjanbureh). Spread out on both sides of the border between Gambia and Senegal the stone circles are thought to have been erected around the 8th century to mark grave sites. There are about 1,000 circles with one major concentration at the Gambian side which most visitors see. The stone circles were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006.
