Jardín is a town located in the southernmost part of the department of Antioquia. Unlike many other hamlets in the country, Jardín has remained largely unchanged since established in 1864. Less than 20,000 people inhabit Jardín, in the past most dedicated their lives to growing coffee, plantains, beans and sugarcane. Today many will be glad to show you their town and surroundings.

Mean daily temperatures are 19°C with moderate humidity. Days are comfortable while nights are colder and a jacket or sweater is required. The area of the municipality is 224 km² (87 mi²).

[edit]From Medellín's Terminal del Sur (Southern Terminal), Carrera 65 #8B-91, Guayabal, two companies operate the route:
- Rápido Ochoa [1] — COP $38,000–42,000 (2026), newer buses, can be booked online. Phone +57 4 444 8888.
- Transportes Jericó — COP $35,000–40,000 (2026), slightly cheaper fares. Reliable and safe.
Buses depart roughly every 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from 5:30AM to 5PM. Trip duration is 3½ hours via a scenic route through the Alto de Minas mountain pass and coffee country. Terminal del Norte does not have routes to Jardín.
From Riosucio in the department of Caldas (south of Antioquia), a small bus runs once daily to Jardín.
By car
[edit]- Departing from Medellín take Autopista Sur through the towns of Caldas, Amagá, Bolombolo, Hispania and Andes. It will take 2½ hours for the distance of 134 km.
- From Riosucio (Caldas - make a note this is a different 'Caldas' that the one mentioned above) drive north through a small and dirty road suitable only for 4x4s and jeeps. Trip duration 2 hours.
By taxi

[edit]Hiring a private car or using InDrive from Medellín costs approximately COP $250,000–350,000 (Mar 2026) for the vehicle. A practical option for groups of 3–4 splitting the cost. Drivers can pick you up at your hotel. InDrive tends to be 10–20% cheaper than traditional taxis.

By moto-ratón
[edit]Ride a moto-ratón - a tiny cart pulled by a motorcycle - for fun or for transportation in town and to nearby destinations. These drivers can take you as far as the trout restaurant or to visit the native tribe. A ride within town costs COP $3,000–5,000 (Mar 2026) For destinations outside the center (trailheads, rural fincas, viewpoints), expect COP $8,000–15,000. Always agree on the price before getting in.
By cable car

[edit]- Basílica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción — The crown jewel of Jardín. This neo-Gothic masterpiece was built over 24 years using locally quarried stone from the Río Tapartó. Its soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and carved stone facade make it one of the most beautiful churches in Colombia. The basilica and the main plaza are jointly listed as a National Monument.
- Parque El Libertador (Main Plaza) — One of the most beautiful town squares in Colombia. Lined with colorful colonial buildings, traditional hand-painted cowhide chairs, and over 20 outdoor cafés. The heart of daily life in Jardín.
- Colonial architecture — Jardín is a living museum of Antioquian colonial architecture from the Colonización Antioqueña era. Wooden balconies with turned balusters, doors painted in vivid reds, blues, and yellows, clay tile roofs, and whitewashed walls create a remarkably unified streetscape.
- Karmata Rúa — Visit the indigenous Emberá-Chamí community (resguardo) about 10 minutes from the town center. Learn about their traditions, crafts, and way of life. Guided visits can be arranged through local tour operators.
- Gallito de Roca Reserve — A dedicated viewing platform where you can see the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), one of South America's most spectacular birds, with its brilliant orange plumage. Best viewed at dawn (5:30–6:30 AM). Jardín is one of the most reliable places in the world to see this bird.

- The Hospital is worth a look — one story high, built with dark river stone blocks, with flower-filled interior patios. Walk 6 blocks down from the main plaza.

- Visit the Aboriginal people of the Emberá-Chamí tribe 10 minute away from the town center, or go to their old cemetery in Morro Amarillo.

- Coffee farm tours — Visit working coffee fincas to experience the complete seed-to-cup process. Several farms around Jardín offer guided tours lasting 2–3 hours (COP $30,000–50,000, Mar 2026). You'll pick coffee cherries, learn about processing, and taste freshly roasted coffee at the source.
- Cueva del Esplendor — A spectacular waterfall that plunges through a hole in the roof of a cave into a natural pool. Reached via a guided hike of approximately 3 hours each way through cloud forest and farmland. One of the most iconic natural attractions in Antioquia. Tours can be arranged in town (COP $50,000–80,000 including transport and guide, Mar 2026).
- Cristo Rey hike — A 45-minute to 1-hour uphill hike to a hilltop Christ statue offering 360-degree panoramic views of the valley, the town, and the surrounding mountains. Especially beautiful at sunset. The trail starts from the town center through farmland and forest.
- La Garrucha cable car — Ride the historic cable car across the valley for spectacular aerial views of Jardín and the Río Volcanes valley.
- Paragliding — Tandem flights over the valley with certified pilots launching from the hills above town. A thrilling way to see Jardín from above.
- Horseback riding — Explore the countryside trails, coffee farms, and mountain paths on horseback. Tours range from 2 hours to full-day rides through the surrounding mountains.
- Birdwatching — Beyond the Gallito de Roca, Jardín's cloud forests are home to over 300 bird species. The region is one of the top birding destinations in Colombia, attracting ornithologists from around the world.
- Trout fishing — Several ponds and creeks about 5 km from town offer rainbow trout fishing. Catch your own and the nearby restaurants will cook it for you.
- Hang around the main plaza with a coffee, a beer, or an aguardiente. The outdoor cafés with their traditional hand-painted leather chairs are perfect for people-watching.
- Visit nearby hills — Alto de las Flores is close by and offers nice views of town.
- Charco Corazón and other natural swimming holes in the rivers around Jardín are popular for a refreshing dip on warm days.
Buy
[edit]The area's handcrafts are basic. The most popular is Carriel Paisa a handbag with a wide shoulder strap used for carrying money and small personal articles. This bags have many tiny hidden pockets to conceal the valuables: think the 'old & wild west'. The outside cover is finished in hairy leather, a distinctive trait.
Eat
[edit]Jardín's food scene centers on traditional Antioquian cuisine, with fresh trout from local rivers being the star dish. Trucha (trout) is the must-try dish — fresh, whole river trout served with patacones (fried plantain), rice, and salad. Available at nearly every restaurant in town.
- Café Europa — A block from the main plaza. Good pizzas and international dishes. Run by a German expat who settled in Jardín.

- Several cafés around the plaza serve excellent locally grown and roasted coffee, fresh juices, and empanadas.

[edit]The many bars and cafés around the main plaza offer everything from locally grown coffee and fresh fruit juices during the day to craft beer, aguardiente, and cocktails at night. The plaza comes alive in the evenings, especially on weekends, with locals and visitors gathering in the outdoor cafés.
