Jecheon (제천, 堤川市) is a district in North Chungcheong in South Korea.

    Understand

    [edit]

It has the third largest population in North Chungcheong Province. It is the northernmost city in the province.

Along with the neighboring regions Danyang-gun and Yeongwol-gun, it has grown into a cement industrial city, and provides exceeds half of the nation's cement production. It also serves as a hub for the mining industry. As the mining industry declines, the industrial structure is being reorganized mainly in the service and tourism industries, and it is being promoted as a "natural healing city" and a "Korean medicine city" based on the three major cities of Yakryeong-si and Hwanggi production base nationwide.

    History

    [edit]

The remains of the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age were often excavated everywhere, but the residents' interest was extremely low compared to Jayang Yeongdang in Gongjeon-ri. At best, it is described in a line in a national history textbook. The Uirimji site built during the Samhan period remains. Jecheon Jeommal Cave is also more famous for its remains of the Stone Age, but it is estimated to have been an important place in the historical period, as the letters engraved by Silla Hwarangs on their pilgrimage still remain. Since it is located in the middle of the country along with Chungju, in the Three Kingdoms period, it was on the trend to be taken away and taken away between the three countries. It was a territory of Baekje in the early 4th century, and after the 5th century, it was incorporated into Goguryeo territory due to Goguryeo's southward policy.

Then, it was incorporated into the territory of Silla during King Jinheung. Later, in accordance with the Hanhwa policy, which was named in the Sun Korean language during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, Naeto-gun was renamed to Naeje-gun (奈堤郡), Sayeol-i-hyeon was renamed to Cheongpung-hyeon (Cheongpung 風縣), and Cheongpung-hyeon was renamed to Naeje-gun. Under the nine-week, five-sogyeong local system during the Unified Silla Period, it belonged to Sakju (now Chuncheon, Gangwon Province).

Even after the founding of Goryeo, the name Naeje-gun continued, but in 940, it was renamed Jeju-gun (郡, 堤). After that, it was called Uicheon 泉 and Councilors, and in 1413 in the Joseon Dynasty, many of the villages containing heads of state from all over the country were renamed Cheon or 堤, and the name was changed to "Jecheon" and the county was established. Cheongpung was a county and was promoted to Dohobu in the 17th century. Later, in 1896, the end of the Joseon Dynasty, Jecheon-hyeon and Cheongpung Dohobu were reorganized into Jecheon-gun and Cheongpung-gun.

In 1914, Cheongpung-gun was merged into Jecheon-gun under the Japanese Government-General of Korea, and Deoksan-myeon was incorporated from Chungju-gun. In 1940, Jecheon-myeon was promoted to Eup. After liberation, many areas in Jecheon were submerged due to the construction of Chungju Dam in 1985. In 1987, six ri were incorporated into Dongryang-myeon, Jungwon-gun, including Seoun-ri, Houn-ri, Hamam-ri, Potan-ri, and Myeongo-ri Sagi-ri in Hansu-myeon.

In 1980, when Jecheon-eup was promoted to a city and separated, the remaining Jecheon-gun was renamed 堤 郡, and in 1991, 11 years later, the name was returned to Jecheon-gun. In January 1995, Jecheon-si and Jecheon-gun were merged to form an urban-rural complex city, and Bongyang-myeon was promoted to the town. After that, through the consolidation of fine Dong, Myeon, and Ri, the current administrative district is roughly formed after 2003. Due to drought, residents from submerged areas visit submerged villages where the bottom of Chungjuho Lake can be seen.

During the Joseon Dynasty, Cheongpung-myeon was famous. Cheongpung-myeon was known for not much in fact, but for the fact that a single person was born. As a result, there are few historical sites. If so, there are Uirimji, cultural assets in Cheongpung-myeon, cultural assets related to righteous army at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, Baeronseongji, the site of Korea's first Catholic seminary and the stronghold of Catholicism such as Father Choi Yang-up's missionary work, and Buddhist art majors are known for their works including Jeongbangsa Temple, which was built during the Unified Silla Dynasty in Kumsusan Mountain, Lee Hyeongseok Pagoda such as the Nine-story Stone Pagoda of Sasa Temple at the Bin Shrine site of Mt. Wolak, which was designated as a treasure, Maae Seokbul at Deokjusa Temple in Wolaksan Mountain, and Mojeon Stone Pagoda, which was built during the Shilla Dynasty, which is located in front of Jangraksa Temple.

As the center of the righteous army's activities at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, many righteous army chiefs became their home, and the village was devastated by the Japanese colonial rule. Jecheon's righteous army was Eulmi's army, which began with the Eulmi Incident, and Yoo In-seok and others were active. Perhaps because it is the home of the righteous army centered on Confucian scholars and the power of Confucian scholars was strong, elderly people in the library of miracles tell old stories and legends of the village.

At first, the name Naeje-gun was used. The name Jecheon means the inner part of the bank, and in the Goryeo Dynasty, it was called Jeju because it was called the village of the bank, but in the Joseon Dynasty, the name was changed from Jeju to Jecheon as Taejong, the third king, gave the order to change it to Cheon or Mountain, respectively, for some villages built as the main state. The name Jecheon was called at this time, and this continued during the Korean Empire, and in 1980, when Jecheon-eup was separated into Jecheon-si, the remaining area was changed to 堤, and in 1991, it was returned to Jecheon-gun again, and in 1995, Jecheon-gun was integrated and the city and county of Jecheon have been integrated.
