Karytaina is in Arcadia.
Understand
[edit]Built on a steep hillside above the Alfios River, it is one of the most dramatically located settlements in the region. The village is dominated by the ruins of a Frankish-era castle and surrounded by rugged mountains, gorges, and stone bridges. Karytaina combines medieval history with a strong traditional character, making it a striking stop in inland Arcadia.
Historically, it played an important role during the Frankish occupation and later in the Greek War of Independence, when it served as a strategic stronghold.
Get in
[edit]Karytaina is reached by road from Megalopoli (around 30–40 minutes) or Tripoli (about 1 hour). The drive follows winding mountain roads through the central Peloponnese. Public transport is limited, so a car is strongly recommended.

[edit]- 1 Karytaina Castle. The most prominent landmark of the village, this 13th-century Frankish castle sits on a rocky peak above Karytaina. Built by the Villehardouin dynasty, it offers panoramic views over the Alfios Valley and surrounding mountains. The ruins include sections of defensive walls, towers, and remnants of internal structures.
- 2 Stone bridge of Karytaina. Below the village lies a historic stone bridge crossing the Alfios River. It is one of the most picturesque viewpoints in the area, with the river cutting through a deep green valley beneath the castle.
