[edit]During the Middle Ages, Les Borges Blanques was a walled town with several defense towers. The town was granted to different nobles and feudal lords, who exercised their dominion over it through various periods.
In the 13th century it was part of the Anglesola domain, and later passed into the hands of the Cardona family. In 1217, Peter the Catholic granted the town the privilege of holding a weekly market, a tradition that has endured to this day.
During the modern era, Les Borges Blanques consolidated itself as an important agricultural and commercial center on the plain of Lleida. The economy was mainly based on the cultivation of olive trees, cereals and vineyards.
The arrival of the railway in 1874, with the inauguration of the Tarragona-Lleida line, was a great boost to the local economy. This infrastructure facilitated the marketing of agricultural products, especially olive oil, which began to be exported to more distant markets.
