[edit]The Lower Peninsula ranges from a dense urban metropolis in the southeast to sparsely populated forest regions in the north. It is separated from the Upper Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac and adjoining waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron which straddle it to the west and east, respectively. It borders with Indiana and Ohio in the south, and Ontario to the southeast. The region is not usually discussed as a whole, except in distinction to the "U.P." (and is almost never referred to as the "L.P.").
