| “ | Ludlow....is probably the loveliest town in England with its hill of Georgian houses ascending from the river Teme to the great tower of the cross-shaped church, rising behind a classic market building. | ” |
| Sir John Betjeman, 1943 | ||
Ludlow is a town at the south edge of Shropshire, a stone’s throw from the County of Hereford and 13 miles from the Welsh border. It has a fine castle and a beautiful historic centre lined with medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings. With a population of 10,000 in 2024, it also has an abundance of quality eating places.
Understand
[edit]
The settlement was known to the ancient Britons as Dinam, meaning “palace of princes”, and that is still the name of the western part of town. The Saxons knew it as hlud-hlǣ or Ludlowe, “loud-waters hill”, lapped to the west and south by the River Teme and to the north by the smaller River Corve. The Normans had a presence here even before their conquest of England, and their next task was to subdue the Welsh. They built a line of castles along the "Marches"– the continually patrolled borderlands – initially as wooden stockades, then as stone bastions. Ludlow was one of these castles, and also the base for ruling Wales, effectively the capital. Around it on the hill grew a medieval walled town.
Ludlow was buffeted less by Welsh attack than by English turmoil, such as the Wars of the Roses and the Civil Wars. But mostly it prospered in an era where wealth stemmed from agriculture especially wool, defensive castles were converted into luxurious mansions, and merchants built fine half-timbered dwellings. It lost importance in later centuries as the Industrial Revolution gathered strength in the Midlands, and was one of the last major towns to be reached by stagecoach rather than railway. This preserved its medieval centre, which from the 20th century was refurbished as a tourist destination.
Visitor Information Centre[dead link] is within the Assembly Rooms on Mill St by the castle, open M-Sa 10AM-4PM.
Get in
[edit]By road
[edit]The town is bypassed to the east by A49. From London and the south follow M40 / M42 to Kidderminster then A456 onto A4117.
For day-trips use the Park & Ride at the A49 junction. Next best for all-day parking is Smithfield, off Sheet Rd, though you have to walk up the hill into town.
Galdeford Car Park incurs the same walk. The castle car park is more expensive and fills up early.
National Cycle Network Route 44, also known as Six Castles Cycleway, courses from Bromfield to Pipe Aston.
By train
[edit]From London either travel from Euston and change at Crewe, or from Paddington and change at Newport. Both routes take about 3 hr 15 min.
Trains from Crewe run hourly and take one hour via Nantwich, Whitchurch, Shrewsbury, Church Stretton and Craven Arms. They continue to Leominster, Hereford, Abergavenny, Newport, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Neath, Swansea, Llanelli, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Fishguard, for ferries to Rosslare.
Trains from Manchester Piccadilly run hourly and take 1 hr 45 min via Stockport, Wilmslow and Crewe then as above through Ludlow to Fishguard.
Trains from Holyhead (for Dublin ferries) run every two hours and take 3 hr 10 min via Llanfairpwll (etcetera etcetera) and stations along the north Wales coast, Chester, Wrexham, Chirk and Shrewsbury then as above through Ludlow to Cardiff.
1 Ludlow station is half a mile north of town centre. It has a staffed ticket office and machines, toilets and a sheltered waiting area. There is step-free access to both platforms.

Splendid castle, first built in stone by the Normans around 1075 AD, repeatedly strengthened during later conflicts and converted into a palace in the 16th / 17th centuries. It was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil Wars so after the Parliamentarians won it became neglected. It was repaired during the 20th century. Adult £10, child £5.

After he died it fell into disrepair - it was owned for a time by the actress Julie Christie (b 1940), who it's fair to say has aged better than the tower. It was restored 2001-05 and the interior is open to the public once a month, see the website for dates.
- 6 Richard's Castle was built by a Norman knight around 1050, before the Norman conquest. It's now just an overgrown earthwork near its namesake village.

Battle of Ludford Bridge
More like a walkover. In the Wars of the Roses, the Yorkists hunkered down in Ludlow as a Lancastrian army advanced on them. They barricaded Ludford Bridge astride the road into town, but then on 12 Oct 1459 they saw the strength of the Lancastrians. So the Yorkist leaders scarpered, leaving their own forces to tamely surrender and their families to be captured. |
