Lumban is a town in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. One of the oldest known precolonial towns in Laguna, it is known for being a center for hand embroidery and Caliraya Lake, an extensive man-made reservoir.
Understand
[edit]Lumban is one of the oldest towns in Laguna, having existed in the precolonial era as evidenced by the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, a 10th century debt certificate that was discovered near the mouth of the Bumbungan (Pagsanjan) River. Lumban’s territory previously included the present-day towns of Cavinti, Pagsanjan and Santa Cruz. Conquered by the Spanish in 1578, it became the first capital of Laguna until its transfer to Pagsanjan in 1688.
During the American period, the construction of the Caliraya Dam inundated parts of Lumban, physically separating its easternmost barangays from the town center and in the long-term providing opportunities to set up campsites, fishing and glamping spots.
Get in
[edit]Lumban lies along the Manila East Road heading to Pagsanjan. Motorists from Manila either enter the town from the south via Pagsanjan, or from the north via Rizal province and Siniloan.
Lumban is directly connected to the provincial capital, Santa Cruz, through jeepneys. It also lies along the Santa Cruz-Siniloan jeepney route. A separate jeepney route connects Santa Cruz with Caliraya.
Get around
[edit]Tricycles are the main mode of transportation between barangays.
While Lumban town proper is accessible via Manila East Road, a trip to Caliraya involves climbing up a junction from Manila East Road near Lumban Public Market.
