Literally the "Water Palace", the Neermahal is a royal palace of the former Kingdom of Tripura, in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake. Built by Maharaja Bir Bikram in 1930, the Neermahal is one of the two water palaces in India, the other being the Jal Mahal of Jaipur, and is significantly larger than the Jaipur one. The palace is divided into two parts: the Andar Mahal at the western side for the royal family, and the open-air theatre at the eastern side for drama, theatre, dance and other cultural events. The palace has 24 rooms in total. The Neermahal has two stairways inside leading down to a ghat on the water of the lake, called the Rajghat, which was used by the maharajas to go to the palace by hand-powered boats. On the ceiling, the palace houses one of the most beautiful terrace gardens of India.
