Menghai County (勐海县; Ménghǎi Xiàn) is a county under the administration of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, in southern Yunnan Province, China. The county is internationally known as one of the most important production centers of Pu’er tea, particularly ripe (shu) Pu’er, and as a core region of ancient tea mountains associated with the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
Menghai is characterized by tropical and subtropical landscapes, extensive tea forests, and ethnic minority cultures, especially those of the Dai and Bulang peoples. While less urbanized than Jinghong, the prefectural capital, Menghai offers travelers an opportunity to experience rural tea culture and traditional village life.
The population is 354,000 (2020). The government is in Menghai Town.
Menghai is renowned for its rich tea culture, distinctive ethnic customs, and natural landscapes. Historically, Menghai has played a key role in the production and trade of Pu’er tea. Many villages in the county preserve ancient tea trees, some several centuries old. The county is also home to the Menghai Tea Factory (Dayi), one of the most influential producers of Pu’er tea in modern China. As one of the core production areas for Pu-erh tea, Menghai has an ideal geographical environment and climate for tea cultivation, particularly for large-leaf tea varieties. Pu-erh tea from Menghai is widely recognized, and many tea enthusiasts appreciate its thick tea color, mellow aroma, and unique aged fragrance. Famous plantations include Laoman'e, Xinbanzhang and Laobanzhang.
In addition to tea culture, Ethnic minorities make up a significant proportion of the population, including Dai, Bulang, Hani, Lahu, and Wa communities. Theravada Buddhism is widely practiced among the Dai, while mountain ethnic groups maintain distinct customs and social structures. Their traditional customs, clothing, festivals, and architecture are filled with local characteristics, making Menghai an ideal destination for experiencing diverse cultures. Local festivals like the Water Splashing Festival and Torch Festival not only showcase ethnic traditions but also attract numerous visitors to participate.
Menghai’s natural scenery is equally captivating, featuring pristine forests, terraced tea plantations, and tropical rainforests. Popular attractions include Nannuo Mountain, Bulang Mountain, and the Mengbalanaxi Scenic Area. During the rainy season, humidity can be close to 100%, which is a climate characteristic that is conducive to the growth of tropical fruits, tea and other crops.
