Pronouns in Minangkabau
There is no exact word for pronoun you in Minangkabau. Generally Minang people immediately call out names or greetings. Sanak can be used as a greeting when addressing someone you don't know and to express friendliness. You can subtitute with uda or abang (for male), and uni or kakak (for female) for the older person, even for those in your age (who doesn’t close enough with you) to show respect. If someone looks much older, you can address with pak (male) or buk (female). The another common word for you is awak (shortened as wak). The word awak is a pronoun in the Minangkabau language which can be flexible depending on the context of the conversation. Sometimes awak means I, we, or you. The use of ang and kau is considered rude (in most area in West Sumatra) if used between strangers. Ang only can be used to male in your age or younger (if you close enough), while kau only can be used to female in your age or younger. For younger person you can substitute ang and kau with adiak or diak (applied for both little brother or little sister). In situations where you meet people you don't know, you can use the words ambo and awak to refer I/me. Ambo can be used for people who are much older, while awak is used for those in your age or younger. Especially for people who are familiar and the same age or younger, you can use word den. Also normal to directly use your name as pronouns I/me. |
