Churches
[edit]- 1 Our Lady of Bethlehem Church (Dongri Church), Uttan Rd, Dongri, Uttan. Built in 1613 this is one of the oldest churches of North Konkan.
- 2 Velankanni Church. Built-in 1544, ten years after the Bombay-Bassein coastal tracts were ceded by the Sultan of Cambay, Bahadur Shah, to Portugal by the Treaty of Bassein. The present structure is not old.
Forts
[edit]- 3 Dongri Fort (Irmitri Fort), Dongri. A fort in a dilapidated condition and is declared 'endangered'.
- 4 Ghodbunder Fort, Ghodbunder, Bhayandar East. Medieval fort built by the Portuguese between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was later occupied by the Maratha Empire and then served as the district headquarters of the East India Company. The word Ghodbunder literally means 'horse port' and the place was used for horse-trading between the Portuguese and Arabs. The fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Do
[edit]- 1 Keshav Srushti (केशव सृष्टी Keśav Sr̥ṣṭī), Uttan, Bhayandar West. A nature retreat of about 150–200 acres (61–81 hectares), and a unified campus run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The retreat is developed in the memory of the RSS founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hegdewar. Several environmental orientation activities are conducted in the campus, with over 3,100 species of trees like teak, palm, ain, kinjal, crjun, casuarina, jamun, palas, Bamboo, Wad, Ashoka, silver oak, babhul, acacia, kadamb, shankasur, umbar etc.
- 2 Uttan Beach. Mainly known for its fishing activities. It is not very clean. An early morning visit can provide an insight into the life of the local fishing community.
