[edit]Mormugao was founded by the Portuguese, who built several forts along the coast in the 17th century. The original natural harbor was extensively expanded in 1888 and has since become one of India's largest ports. In 1961, Goa became part of India. The port of Mormugao became a major export port for Indian iron ore.
