[edit]Ancient Steps: The earliest known inhabitants on the land now known as Mustang Island were the Karankawa indigenous people. The Karankawa were a hunter-gatherer people, and they lived off the shellfish and mussels they caught in the Gulf. Too, the Karankawa were known as cannibals.

[edit]The nearest town is Port Aransas, about six miles to the northeast. Corpus Christi is just over the Padre Island causeway about ten miles to the west.
