Neunkirchen (Saarland) Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Neunkirchen is a city in the state of Saarland, Germany. With a population of approximately 47,000 (2024), it is the second-largest city in the state and serves as a major commercial hub for the eastern Saar region.

Understand

[edit]

Neunkirchen (the name translates to "nine churches") is pronounced with the "eu" sounding like the "oy" in "boy". The "ch" is a soft, hissing sound, similar to the "h" in the English word "human", it is much softer than the "ch" in "Loch" or the Spanish "j". While the river Saar does not flow through the town, it is often officially called Neunkirchen (Saar) to distinguish it from other towns with the same name. The city's coat of arms, featuring a church alongside symbols of mining and industry, reflects its historical identity. For over a century, the city was dominated by the massive Neunkircher Eisenwerk (ironworks) located right in the center.

Following the decline of heavy industry in the 1980s, the city successfully transitioned into a modern shopping and service center. The former industrial grounds now house the Saarpark-Center, the largest mall in the region, while preserved blast furnaces stand as a testament to its "Iron City" heritage. Perhaps its most famous son is Erich Honecker, who led the GDR (East Germany) for most of its existence; he was born in the district of Wiebelskirchen.

By foot

[edit]

The city center, including the Saarpark-Center, the old ironworks (Altes Hüttenareal), and the main railway station, is compact and easily navigable on foot. However, be aware that some districts and the zoo are located on higher ground, so expect some uphill walks.

By bus

[edit]

The local bus network is operated by the NVG (Neunkircher Verkehrs GmbH). Most lines converge at the central bus station, Stummplatz, which is the heart of the shopping district.

  • Tickets: Neunkirchen is part of the saarVV regional tariff system. You can buy tickets directly from the driver or via the saarVV app.
  • flitsaar: This is an on-demand shuttle service that complements the regular bus lines, especially during off-peak hours or in less central areas. It can be booked via a dedicated app.

By bicycle

[edit]

While the city centre is manageable, cycling in Neunkirchen can be challenging due to the hilly topography and heavy traffic on main arterial roads. There are scenic cycle paths along the outskirts that connect to the wider Saarland cycling network.

By car

[edit]

Driving is straightforward, with clear signage.

  • Parking: There is ample parking available at the Saarpark-Center (usually the first hour is cheap or even free on certain afternoons) and around the main station. The city centre has several multi-storey car parks that are well-indicated by a parking guidance system.
