Nizhneudinsk is a city of 34,000 people (2018) in Irkutsk Oblast. Nizhneudinsk is a stop on the Trans Siberian Railway, almost equidistant from Moscow and Vladivostok. The town boasts a small museum, a pretty church and a movie theatre. There are some caves and a waterfall a 20-km trek away.

Nizhneudinsk has long, severely cold winters and short, warm summers. Precipitation is quite low but is much higher in summer than at other times of the year.
