By air

[edit]

There are domestic airports in Lampang and Nan with regular flights operating from Bangkok.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai both have larger airports and more frequent flights to and from other places beyond Bangkok. These make good entry points to Lamphun and Phayao, respectively.

By road

[edit]

Highway 1, or Phahonyothin road, is the major highway going up north starts in Bangkok passes through Lampang and Phayao and ends in Chiang Rai.

Highway 11 is another major offshoot highway, splitting from Highway 32, starts in Sing Buri passes through Lampang and Lamphun before ending in Chiang Mai.

Highway 101 which is an offshoot of Highway 1 that starts in Kamphaeng Phet passes through Phrae and Nan and ends at the Thai-Laotian border.

Get around

[edit]

The best way to get around the region is by car. In addition to private cars, many of the towns have scheduled buses that travel between the provinces.

Stay safe

[edit]

The roads connecting the various provinces and towns often go via the mountains which can have narrow turns and no street lighting. Take extra care when driving on such roads especially given that Thai drivers can be very aggressive and often go over the speed limit.
