Oqaatsut Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Oqaatsut (old Danish name: Rodebay) is a village in Western Greenland.

Understand

[edit]

Oqaatsut (Greenlandic) or Rodebay (Danish) is a coastal village with 46 inhabitants as of 2010.

Get in

[edit]

The local shipping line Diskoline provides regular services from Ilulissat to Oqaatsut, and further to Sarqaq, in summer months.

You can also charter a boat from Ilulissat.

The most beautiful is, of course, to hike to Oqaatsut. It is a beautiful, pleasant, track, takes some 5-7 hours. You can not get lost, just follow the coast line.

Get around

[edit]

You can walk and explore the entire village in about 30 mins.

Do

[edit]

Beautiful short and long hikes.

During the season, the kayakers come from Ilulissat for a 4-5 hours tour at the southern bay of Oqaatsut, beautiful experience to kayak between the icebergs. You can also join them directly in Oqaatsut.

Buy

[edit]

There is a typical Greenlandic food store. At most times, it is well stocked.

Eat & Drink

[edit]

All in all, the food in Rodebay is pretty bad, but they serve a rare Greenlandic microbrew there (you must have cash on hand to pay for the beer, oddly).

There is only one restaurant in town.

  • 69.3413-51.001161 H8 (By the dock). Sandwiches and seafood. OSM directions

Sleep

[edit]

There is a small hotel (Hotel Nordlys) and a kind of a youth hostel, next to H37. There is a bed & breakfast (as of 2017). The first and third can be booked through Booking.com.

  • 69.3433-51.00291 Hotel Nordlys, B 123, +299 58 28 20, . Check-in: 14:00, check-out: 10:00. Small cozy hotel. At least 4 rooms that can accommodate up to 25 guests. Clean, breakfast included (served from 07:00-09:30) OSM directions

Stay safe

[edit]

Beware the mosquitoes if you're there in the summer. In early July, the mosquitoes are brutal — you will have to wear headnets 24/7 whenever you are outside.

In some years, there are no mosquitoes at all.

Connect

[edit]

Go next

[edit]

This is a dead end if you're hiking. You can hike or take a boat back to Ilulissat.
