Pangil Voyage Tips and guide

Pangil is a town in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. The town is known for its natural attractions and its venerated Marian image of Our Lady of O, a rare portrayal of the Virgin Mary in her pregnant state.

Understand

[edit]

Pangil as a settlement had existed long before the Spanish conquest. It derives its name from a local chieftain, although it literally means "fang" in Filipino. The town prides itself on a local legend that during the 18th century, King Charles III of Spain was banished here when he was a prince and later donated the venerated image of Our Lady of O as a sign of his fondness for Pangil, despite overwhelming evidence against any of these even happening.

Orientation

[edit]

Pangil town center is wedged in a narrow plain between the Sierra Madre Mountains to the east and Laguna de Bay to the west. The creek-like Pangil River passes through the center of town. Transportation-wise, Pangil is bounded to the east by the wide Manila East Road and to the west by Pakil-Pangil-Mabitac Road, a two-lane inner road that runs northwards from the boundary with Pakil on the junction with Manila East Road through Balian and the town center terminating in Mabitac town. Pangil also has an extensive highland area leading to the boundary with Quezon.

Pangil also has an exclave, Pangil West, on the other side of Laguna de Bay that has a boundary with Mabitac and Pakil. This is a less-visited rural area that is accessible from Pangil town proper by boat or a lengthy drive around Laguna de Bay via Siniloan and Mabitac.

Get in

[edit]

Pangil lies along the Manila East Road heading to Pagsanjan. Motorists from Manila either enter the town from the south via Pagsanjan, or from the north via Rizal province and Siniloan.

Pangil West is accessible via Pililla-Jalajala-Pakil Road, involving a detour down the length of the Jalajala Peninsula in Rizal, or through Manila East Road, taking a detour to Mabitac and then through the Pakil-Pangil-Mabitac Road.

By jeep

[edit]

Pangil East lies along the Santa Cruz-Siniloan jeepney route.

Transfers to Pangil West can be taken in Siniloan, where infrequent jeepneys to Jalajala pass through Mabitac.

Pangil's Roman Catholic church was largely rebuilt following World War II destruction in a more modernist style, resulting in an austere and smooth look. It is known for hosting the Nuestra Señora de la O, a rare venerated image of the Virgin Mary in her pregnant state, and Santo Niño de la O, an equally venerated image of the Christ Child. At the side of the building is a memorial to Charles III and his supposed exile in Pangil. Pangil Church on Wikipedia OSM directions

Stay safe

[edit]

In the rainy season, Laguna de Bay can overflow, resulting in the blockage of Manila East Road. Likewise, flashfloods can happen within the town center due to the Pangil River, which can become a raging torrent.
