    Syöte National Park

    [edit]

5 Syöte National Park, +358 20-639-6550 (Syöte Visitor Centre). National park shared between the municipalities Pudasjärvi, Posio and Taivalkoski. One part of the park stretches from the Syöte ski resort to the north and north-west, extending into Posio and Taivalkoski in the north. Another part lies on the border between Pudasjärvi and Taivalkoski, east of Syöte, and two more parts still more east, in Taivalkoski, north of the municipal centre. The two first mentioned are connected by hiking trails. The landscape is dominated by wooded hills and lots of small lakes. Hiking, skiing, canoeing and snowmobiling routes extend far from the park; a maintained part of the UKK trail all the way to Sotkamo and the snowmobile routes are part of a national network.

There are good services in and by the park in Pudasjärvi, thanks to the Syöte resort if nothing else. In the other parts of the park services are more sparse, but there are still e.g. many lean-to shelters and other campfire sites (only those with a chimney may be used during wildfire warnings, and care should be taken also with those; a camping stove can be used at all times, with due care). Waste should be carried out from the park. There are five day huts, eight open wilderness huts and three rental huts in the park. Camping is allowed by the shelters and campfire sites, and in the wilderness zone in the north and in the western of the Taivalkoski areas (Latvavaara–Kortevaara–Kärppävaara).

The 4 visitor centre is accessible for the disabled. The Korpikolvan polku nature trail (0.5 km) and part of the Naavaparta Trail (3 km; to the 5 Annintupa day hut) are accessible by assisted wheelchair, as is the Kellarilampi Nature Trail (1 km) in Iso-Syöte Hiking Area.
