    Puttur is a city in Dakshina Kannada, a coastal region of the Indian province of Karnataka.

    The name Puttur is said to be derived from muttoor (u as in put, not but) - muttu + ooru. Muttu translates to pearl, ooru to town/city in local Tulu Language. Legend has it that pearls used to grow in the Temple Tank of Shree Mahalingeshwara.
