Rijeka Crnojevica is a small historical town in Central Montenegro on the ancient trading route through Montenegro. The city is very near the most beautiful part of Lake Skadar. It is worth visiting for both the lake and the old architecture left over from the trader days.
Get in
[edit]Take a bus from either Podgorica to Budva or vice versa. You will have to ask the driver to drop you off at the main road between Cetinje and Podgorica, ideally at Metirizi. Tell the ticket collecting guy well ahead of time. From there start walking.Or get off at the road crossing to Rijeka Crnojevica/Karuc/Dodosi near Podgorica and hitch hike. It shouldn't take you too long to get picked up.
There are direct buses to Rijeka Crnojevica from the Podgorica main bus station but they may be hard to find and not run very often.
Get around
[edit]See
[edit]The whole surrounding area is spectacular. The ancient trade route has long since been abandoned but traces of the old road are still around (often times grown over with trees). The lake is full of frogs and snakes, neither of which are dangerous. Don't be intimidated by all of the water snakes (you'll see literally hundreds) they are harmless so go ahead and go for a swim.
- Pavlova Strana viewpoint is one of the three most stunning view in whole Montenegro.
- There is an old pedestrian bridge that was used for the trade route that is very impressive.
- There are lots of abandoned houses.
- King Nikola's castle is interesting to explore.
Do
[edit]- Hiking from Rijeka Crnojevica to Virpazar supposedly is a great 1 day hike.
- Borrow a canoe for 10 EUR many of the suppliers there.
- Do a Skadar Lake Boat tour from here because you have the best views with these local suppliers because tours from Virpazar are boring and you miss this area.
- Excellent swimming, just avoid the lily pads as you want to be good to nature.

[edit]There are several hotels and pensions available via the typical webpages. A campsite is at the lake directly (flooded November until May) another one in Sindon.

[edit]No buses run from Rijeka Crnojevica back to Podgorica.
There is regular bus transport on the main road and you can hike down then, e.g. Metirizi stop. Those buses go hourly from Kotor/Budva to Cetinje as main hub and then continue to Podgorica.
