[edit]By air
[edit]- Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark, New Jersey, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport: The three major international airports in the New York City area offer service to just about anywhere. Rockland-based taxi and livery cars offer regular service to and from the three internationals from most areas of the county. New York City yellow cabs will take you to Rockland in a pinch, but the fares can be exorbitant. Ask if your hotel offers shuttle service.
- Westchester County Airport, 240 Airport Road, White Plains, +1 914-995-4860 (airlines). If you are trying to dodge the congestion of the three New York City/New Jersey international airports, Westchester's airport offers an alternative.
- Stewart International Airport, 1180 First St, New Windsor, +1 845-564-2100. Another alternative to the congestion of the 3 major airports. Allegiant Air, American Eagle, and JetBlue operate flights from Florida and Philadelphia.
By train
[edit]- Metro North Rail Road's Hudson Line from New York City's Grand Central Terminal to Tarrytown. Use Transport of Rockland's Tappan Zeexpress bus or local taxis to cross the Hudson River to Rockland.
- Metro North Rail Road's Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines provide service from New York City and northern New Jersey. Take New Jersey Transit from New York Penn Station to Secaucus, transfer to Metro North Rail Road. Pascack serves Nanuet, Pearl River, and Spring Valley. Port Jervis makes stops at Suffern and Sloatsburg.
Get around
[edit]Easily accessible from the NY Thruway (Interstates 87/287) as well as the Garden State Parkway and the I-86 corridor (still NY 17 in this area).
NY 303, NY 304, US 9W, NY 59, NY 45, and the Palisades Parkway offer access to many area attractions. Locally, roads such as NY 59 are known as "Route 59" or "Route 303" or may be referred to with just the number (as an example, locals may say a restaurant is "on 59" or "by 303").

[edit]In July 1779 American General "Mad" Anthony Wayne took the fortifications at Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site in Stony Point from the British in a daring midnight raid. The oldest remaining lighthouse on the Hudson River is on the point.
The Hopper House Art Center in Nyack is the birthplace and boyhood home of painter Edward Hopper.
The Hudson River Valley was once known as the brickmaking capital of the world. At its peak, it supplied New York City's rapid urbanization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Three hundred years of brick production ended in the early 21st century with the closing of the last active brickyard. The Haverstraw Brick Museum in Haverstraw chronicles brickmaking in Haverstraw, one of the more prolific centers of the industry in the valley.
Piermont is a small town that is one of the richest areas in Rockland County. Filled with gorgeous homes overlooking the Hudson river, it is quite the sight to see. Some of the best restaurants are in the area; most have decks on the river. There is also live music playing often at most of these restaurants.
Do
[edit]Visit a farmer's market. Find markets in places like Piermont and Spring Valley.
Visit Downtown Nyack on Main Street. This strip is in a gorgeous area overlooking the Hudson River and Tappan Zee Bridge. Every year, three street fairs are conducted; booths are set up selling jewelry, clothing, handbags, artwork, sculptures, and more.
Visit a mall. The Palisades Center is a large 4-level fully indoor mall located in West Nyack. It is filled with a large variety of stores and restaurants as well as an ice skating rink, a movie theater, a fun escape/adventure room (5 Wits), a comedy club, and a massive high ropes course. There is also the Shops at Nanuet located in Nanuet along NY 59 which is an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and stores.
See a parade. Every year, Pearl River has a large St Patrick's day parade on Middletown Road (if weather permits) because of Pearl River's history of Irish immigration and heritage. The parade can include members of local organizations, veterans, vintage fire trucks, vintage cars, school marching bands, and music. Local restaurants that are located along the parade route may offer special versions of their food in celebration, such as King Kone offering green colored ice cream and Zimi's selling green bagels. It is important to arrive very early as parking may be very difficult to find. Some people park their vehicles near the parade in advance.
Walk or jog on the Mario Cuomo Bridge. The Mario Cuomo Bridge (formerly known as the Tappan Zee Bridge, which is still sometimes referred to as such) has a path you can walk along over the Hudson River. You can see New York City in the distance (if weather allows).
Eat
[edit]Pizza

There is a large variety of pizza restaurants in Rockland County that is definitely worth trying out. Rockland County does not have that many chain pizza restaurant locations (such as Pizza Hut or Papa Johns) and instead has a large amount of local, often family owned, pizza restaurants. Some popular pizza places include (but are definitely not limited to) the Nanuet Hotel (Nanuet), Posa Posa (Nanuet), Martio's Pizza (Nanuet), Sorrento's (Pearl River), and Rocco's (New City).
Some pizza places in Rockland County do not offer any delivery services and require you to call the restaurant and pick up your order yourself, such as the Nanuet Hotel and Martio's. These two pizza places are still very popular in Nanuet for their pizza and locals don't seem to mind these places not offering delivery as they can order over the phone and pick up their food themselves.
Bagels
There are many different bagel restaurants around Rockland County. Bagels in Rockland County tend to be large with a lot of filling (usually either cream cheese or butter). Two examples of popular bagel spots include Zimi's, which has a location in Nanuet and Pearl River and Bagel Boys which has a location in New City, Nanuet, and Suffern.
