Umpqua National Forest

Roseburg is the county seat of Douglas County, in Southern Oregon and is nestled in the beautiful Umpqua Valley. Roseburg is known for their lumber mills and forest products which they distribute globally. The small town is far from quiet and has quite a bit of history, including a visit from the music legend Johnny Cash, who dedicated the song "Lumberjack" to Roseburg.

Understand

[edit]

Roseburg is known as the "Timber Capital of the Nation" from the continuous production of wood products that has been produced from the area. This small town borders the Umpqua National Forest and is home to the Douglas Fir, a softwood that is very durable.

Bordering the Umpqua National Forest, the town of Roseburg is the perfect destination for those that enjoy being outdoors. From hiking to fishing (including a 30 mile stretch of river designated for fly-fishing) and hunting to enjoy a day on the lake, this quiet town has a lot to offer.

Roseburg is well known for its annual Graffiti Weekend, held each year on the week after the 4th of July, where car enthusiasts from all over drive their classic cars into town for a cruise. Other events in the area include the Veteran's Day Parade, Umpqua Valley Arts Summer Arts Festival, Umpqua Fishing Enhancement Derby, Sportsman Show, Douglas County Fair, and the Festival of Lights. Every Tuesday throughout the summer months, you can enjoy Music on the Halfshell at Stewart Park.

From here you can venture to the Oregon Coast and take a ride in Douglas County's OHV Park or travel up the North Umpqua River along the Highway of Waterfalls, visit Crater Lake, and explore everything mother nature has to offer us. The North Umpqua is also known to be an excellent place for fly fishing while the main Umpqua River is a great place to catch Steelhead and Salmon every year. The Umpqua Valley, in which Roseburg was built, has become a popular place for vineyards if you fancy a day of tasting some of Oregon's finest wines.

Just south of Roseburg is the small town of Winston, where the Wildlife Safari zoo is. The animals roam free there, and it has an excellent cheetah breeding program. Visit, but stay in your car.
