Understand
[edit]Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is best known for its strong religious heritage and its association with Mary Magdalene. According to tradition, she lived in a cave in the nearby Sainte-Baume massif after arriving in Provence, and her remains were later discovered here in the 13th century.
This discovery led to the construction of the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene, which became a major pilgrimage destination in medieval Europe. Today, the town retains a quiet Provençal character, with markets, narrow streets, and a relaxed atmosphere typical of inland Provence.
