    • 1 Salta – Salta is a colonial city founded in 1582 by Hernando de Lerma.
    • 2 Cafayate
    • 3 San Antonio de los Cobres – An interesting mining town with Quinoa culture. It can be reached by the Tren a las Nubes, which travels over some of the highest bridges in the world. The train itself is not that spectacular, but if you are at the bridge when the train crosses, can be quite some experience.

    Understand

    [edit]

The Salta province features an amazing landscapes of mountains, rivers, valleys, dams, a blue sky and pure air, along with traditions, some going back to the origins of Argentinean culture. It's close to the province of Jujuy and its Quebrada de Humahuaca. People are nice and hospitable.

    [edit]

Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport (SLA IATA)

    Get around

    [edit]

Nights are full of people gathering around a fire (fogones) playing the guitar. Music is part of the spirit of Salta.

    See

    [edit]

Beautiful (and colorful) rock formations and similar sights:

    • 1 Los colorados.
    • 2 Quebrada de las Conchas.
    • 3 El Anfiteatro.
    • 4 Garganta del Diablo.

    Do

    [edit]
    • 1 Tren a las nubes (Leaves from the city of Salta arrives at La Polvorilla Viaduct). Scenic train on all-day round-trip route reaching altitude of 4,200 meters making it the third highest railway in the world. The train departs from Salta very early in the morning. It arrives in San Antonio de los Cobres and continues to Viaducto La Polvorilla. From there, the train returns to Salta, where it arrives 16 hours later. The train has a restaurant, medical attention and guides in several languages. The train is a little overpriced but it crosses one of the highest bridges in the world. AR$2,570 (bus & train combination), AR$1,590 (just train). Tren a las Nubes (Q803162) on Wikidata Tren a las Nubes on Wikipedia
    • Take a tour of the stunning Valles Calchaquíes
    • Stay at an estancia
    • Visit wineries in Cafayate

    Eat

    [edit]

Empanadas Salteñas. Tourists really enjoy typical dishes based on natural vegetables with goat or deer meat. “Tamales, locro and humita” are a must at all the local restaurants.

    Drink

    [edit]

Other options are the wines produced in the region, a treasure in Salta. You can taste them in all bars and restaurants or in any of the wine cellars around the city that you can visit during your trip. Some of the most important wine cellars are:

    • Etchart: Ruta Nacional 40 km 1047, Cafayate.
    • Bodegas y viñedos Nanni S.A.: Silverio Chavarría151, Cafayate.
    • Viñas Resort: Ruta Provincial 21 camino al Divisadero, Cafayate.

There, you can try different varieties of red and white wines, but the ‘star’ is the TORRONTÉS, a white one typical of the region. You can’t miss it!

This region travel guide to Salta is an outline and may need more content. It has a template, but there is not enough information present. If there are Cities and Other destinations listed, they may not all be at usable status or there may not be a valid regional structure and a "Get in" section describing all of the typical ways to get here. Please plunge forward and help it grow!
