San Jose, often called San Jose City or SJC in short, is a small city in Nueva Ecija.
Understand
[edit | edit source]San Jose sits on a plain which blurs into the Caraballo Mountains that forms the boundary with Nueva Vizcaya. It is at the crossroads of three highways, the Maharlika Highway (Route 1), San Jose-Lupao Road (Route 56), and Rizal-San Jose Road (Route 111).
The city used to be the barrio of Cabaritan (Kabaritan) in nearby Lupao until the Spaniards decided to upgrade it to a town in 1894 and renamed it after its patron saint, St. Joseph.
Agriculture is the main source of local revenue, and around the city are sprawling rice paddies which dominate the landscape.
Get in
[edit | edit source]As a major highway junction, San Jose is a stopover on the way to Cagayan Valley, Aurora and eastern Pangasinan via Lupao.
By bus
[edit | edit source]- Baliwag Transit (BTI). One bus departs every hour or two from their terminals at Caloocan or Cubao, Quezon City. Bus station at San Jose-Lupao Road.
- Five Star. About 3 ordinary buses run between Dagupan and Santiago City. Bus stop near the public market
- Genesis Transport. Services connect with Olongapo and San Fernando, Pampanga.
- Golden Bee. Baliwag Transit's sister bus line, with premium buses departing from Cubao or Pasay.
Get around
[edit | edit source]Tricycles are the main mode of transport between barangays.
The city center suffers from heavy traffic congestion. A bypass road leads from Barangay Malasin, just before the Caraballo mountains, to Santo Tomas, on the boundary with Munoz, but involves passing through narrow and sometimes unlighted two-lane roads and beside rice fields and unfenced irrigation canals deep enough to swallow an SUV.
