[edit]- 1 Kanheri Caves (कान्हेरी गुहा Kānherī Guhā or कान्हेरी लेणी Kānherī Leṇī). A complex of 109 Buddhist temples cut out of rock, and a nice place to visit for history enthusiasts. The name "Kanheri" comes from Sanskrit Kr̥ṣṇagiri (कृष्णगिरि), meaning "black mountain". Most of the caves here were Buddhist viharas, which are meant for living, studying and meditating. The larger caves functioned as chaityas, or halls for congregational worship. The institution was also associated with trade centres like Sopara, Kalyan, Nashik, Paithan and Ujjain.
- 2 Teenmurti Temple (तीनमूर्ती मंदिर Tīnmūrtī Mandir). Widely visited by the Digambar sect of the Jain community. It has three huge idols of Lord Adinath and his two sons, Bahubali and Bharat.
- 3 Tulsi Lake (तुळ्शी तलाव Tuḷśī Talāv). The second-largest lake in Mumbai and supplies part of the city's potable water. It is inhabited by mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris).
Thane West
[edit]- 4 Yeoor Hills (Mama Bhanja Hills). A group of picturesque hills, an unspoiled and pollution-free area, carpeted by natural foliage and fauna. Yeoor Hills is home to about 78 known species of birds and about 12 species of animals. Besides, it has the highest density of leopards in India. A trek through Yeoor Hills is an enchanting experience. The prime attraction here is the 150-year-old holy shrine of Mama Bhanja.
Do
[edit]
Besides, there are a number of public walking trails in the national park. The popular Ashok Van trail winds through thick forests to a dense cluster of Ashoka trees that are a welcome halfway resting spot. The return journey is usually via the Gaumukh trail that leads to an open volcanic rock face and ends at the Kanheri Caves. A more challenging route is called the "View Point" trail and leads to the highest point in Mumbai. It affords a panoramic view of the city and its three lakes – Tulsi Lake, Vihar Lake and Powai Lake. The Nagla Forest Block Trail is a famous 3 km (1.9 mi) trail which ends in the mangroves of the Vasai Creek and is home to many bird species.
- Toy train — There's a narrow-gauge railway service named Van Rani (वन राणी Van Rāṇī, literally 'jungle queen'), which offers a 15-minute ride along the foothills of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at 190 m (620 ft) Pavilion Hill traverses a couple of bridges and tunnels and passes over the Deer Park.
- Boating — Boating services are available near the Van Rani starting point with 2- and 4-seater pedalos for sailing in the small lake, which has a view bridge where you can stand and watch the boats in the water.
- Jungle safari — The jungle safari is a 20-minute ride through a 12-hectare fenced forest area in one of the park's green buses. During visiting hours, some of the resident lions are let out into the enclosure and can be viewed from the safety of the bus. There are 4 tigers that are kept semi-confined in a fenced area that is toured by the buses. Here the visitors are caged in the bus so the big cats can roam like in the wild.
