Santillana del Mar Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Santillana del Mar is a picturesque and very touristy village in Cantabria in northern Spain, lined with medieval buildings. It's also famous for the prehistoric art in the Altamira Caves 2 km west. Together with its outlying villages it had a population of 4200 in 2025.

The place is named for its abbey and church of Santa Juliana, but the joke goes that Santillana is a triple lie: it's neither holy (santa), nor on a plain (llana) nor by the sea. (This very old joke was first applied to the Holy Roman Empire.) But the standout fibber and liar is the fictional character born here: Gil Blas by Alain-René Lesage, published 1715 to 1735.

Oficina de Turismo is at Calle Jesús Otero 20, open daily 09:00-19:00.

Map of Santillana del Mar

Santillana is 24 km west of Santander city and airport, follow A-67.

Cantabria buses run four times a day from Santander, taking 40 min. They continue to Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera.

Alsa buses run every hour or so from Torrelavega, taking 20 min. Torrelavega is 10 km east of Santillana, with frequent buses and trains from Santander.

There are commuter trains from Santander (and some from Oviedo) on line C2 that go to Puente San Miguel (4 km south of Santillana but with no onward bus).

Get around

[edit]

Walk. Village centre is small and traffic-restricted.

See

[edit]
Calle Cantón in Santillana
  • A total solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 Aug 2026, starting at 20.27 and lasting 80 sec. The chances of a clear sky are only 45%, and you need to find a spot with a clear view to the northwest horizon, where the sun will be setting. Coast is best: hilltops may be socked in by cloud, and after the show you’d have to descend an unfamiliar hill trail in darkness.
  • Village centre has honey-limestone buildings ranged along cobbled alleys. From the bus stop and parking lot walk 400 m west to the foot of Santo Domingo alley, opposite the Diocesan Museum and Hotel Santillana. The alley leads north into the spine of the village along Juan Infante to Plaza Mayor, Town Hall and the Parador.
  • Museo Diocesiano Regina Coeli, El Cruce, +34 942 840317. Tu-Su 10:00-13:30, 16:00-18:30. Religious art. Adult €3.
  • Convento de las Clarisas or Monasterio Regina Coeli is 100 m east of the Diocesan Museum at Av de Le Dorat 4. It’s still active, no public admittance but you can buy hand-made sweets from the nuns.
  • Chapel of San Roque is a small shrine adjoining Hotel Santillana, opposite the Diocesan Museum.
  • Palacio de Peredo - Barrera or Palacio de los Benamejís is an elegant 18th century mansion at the foot of Santo Domingo. It sometimes hosts art exhibitions.
  • Casa de los Villa opposite at Santo Domingo 7 is also 18th century.
  • Plaza Mayor is a cobbled triangle, with Town Hall on its west side.
Torre de Don Borja at the head of the plaza is now a cultural centre.
Torre del Merino east side of the plaza is a 14th century defensive tower. The Merino was the king’s magistrate, he wasn’t a sheep.
Casa de los Barreda – Bracho is now the Parador Gil Blas, see below.
Casa de los Estrada is 17th century. It’s opposite the Parador.
Casas del Águila y la Parra – “The Houses of the Eagle and the Vine” – next to Town Hall are 16th and 17th century. They’re now a small free exhibition space, open M 12:00-14:00, Tu-Sa 10:00-14:00, 16:00-18:30, Su 16:00-18:30. The bison statue outside is by Jesús Otero, in reference to the beasts depicted in Altamira cave.
  • Casa de Leonor de la Vega at Cantón 10 was built around 1600. It’s named for the mother of the first Marqués of Santillana, but she can’t have lived there, since she died in 1432.
  • Torre de los Velarde is a 15th century tower house at Carrera 5, a block east of Plaza Mayor. It was built by an ancestor of the fellow who built Palacio Velarde by Santa Juliana.
  • El Museo de la Tortura, Bertrand Clisson 1, +34 942 840273. Daily 10:00-22:00. Formidable collection of instruments of torture from around Europe, including those used by the Spanish Inquisition. Not for the squeamish. Adult €5, child €3.
  • Casa de los Hombrones at Río 4 is 15th / 16th century. It’s named for the two knights posing on its grand coat-of-arms.
Collegiata de Santa Juliana
  • 43.392217-4.1060061 Collegiata de Santa Juliana, Plaza Abad Francisco Navarro, +34 639 830520. Tu-Su 10:00-13:00, 16:00-19:00. Romanesque monastery church dating to the 12th century when the Augustinians took over from the Benedictines, but largely rebuilt in the 16th. The cloisters have 42 columns and depict Biblical scenes. Adult €3. Collegiate church and cloister of St Juliana on Wikipedia Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana (Q1609022) on Wikidata
  • Casas de los Quevedo & Cossio are a knock-through of two 17th / 18th century houses at Río 10 by Santa Juliana. They’re now a desserts shop.
  • Casa de la archiduquesa Margarita de Austria is across the street at Río 17. It’s late 17th century and belonged to the Barreda-Bracho family. Margarita of Austria (1894-1986) was part of the Imperial Hapsburg family, deposed after the First World War. Thereafter she rattled around Europe with two spells in Spain but her last years were in Italy.
  • Museo Jesús Otero, Plaza de Francisco Abad (facing Santa Juliana), +34 942 840198. Tu-Sa 10:00-13:30, 16:00-20:00. Displaying works by local sculptor Jesús Otero (1908-1994). Free.
  • Palacio de Velarde, Plaza las Arenas 8 (next to Santa Juliana), +34 942 140524. Daily 11:00-15:00, 16:00-21:00. Mansion built in the 15th century and modified in the 17th. It’s now an immersive museum of medieval life, with VR simulacra narrating their story. But it’s only in Spanish with no subtitles so it’s poor value if you’re not fluent. Adult €10, conc €8, child €6.
Bison in Altamira cave
  • Museo Altamira Mitológica or Mythology Museum at Revolgo 6 is basically a side-hustle for Terraza El Roblón bar, a small garden with a few statues of legendary monsters. It’s nothing to do with Altamira cave, and most visitors reckon it’s overpriced at €4.
  • Casa de los Sánchez Tagle is at Revolgo 1 opposite Mythology Museum. It was built at the close of the 17th century for a family that got rich in Mexico. Admire the façade, no admittance.
  • 43.3774-4.12192 Altamira, Av Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, +34 942 818005. Tu-Sa 09:30-18:00, Su 09:30-15:00. The caves of Altamira, discovered in 1868, have prehistoric paintings as old as 36,000 years - they were added to or amended over another 20,000 years. The condensation from 20th century tourists damaged the paintings so the caves were closed to the public and a replica cave built - this is what you tour, along with the adjacent museum. The true cave is 500 m north but closed off. Adult €3, child free. Cave of Altamira on Wikipedia OSM directions

  • 43.2907-3.96597 Cuevas del Monte Castillo, Puente Viesgo, +34 942 598425. Tu-Sa 09:30-13:30, 14:30-18:30, Su 09:30-14:30. Monte Castillo is riddled with caves containing Paleolithic art about the same age as Altamira. Two caves are open to view, and here you see the originals not a replica. But that means tightly restricted numbers, so you need to book ahead, you're unlikely to find availability on the day. It's worth seeing both: Castillo, and Las Monedas named for coins found there. Adult €15, conc or child €7.50. OSM directions

Drink

[edit]

Bars are strung along the same main alleys as the restaurants, plus a loop south of the crossroads on Av del Alcalde Antonio Sandi.

As in neighbouring Asturias, the region produces a small amount of wine but the main drink is sidra, hard dry cider. Traditionally you pour from a bottle above your head to a glass below your waist, causing much spillage and wet shoes.

Sleep

  • Santander is a modern city (the old town burned down) but has lots to see and do.
  • Comillas to the west was a beach resort for Spanish royalty, so it has fine buildings out of proportion to its size.
  • San Vicente de la Barquera is another beach resort to the west, by Oyambre nature reserve.
